Summary

An enchanting novel about fate, second chances, and hope, lost and found, by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Last of the Moon Girls

Soline Roussel is well schooled in the business of happy endings。 For generations her family has kept an exclusive bridal salon in Paris, where magic is worked with needle and thread。 It’s said that the bride who wears a Roussel gown is guaranteed a lifetime of joy。 But devastating losses during World War II leave Soline’s world and heart in ruins and her faith in love shaken。 She boxes up her memories, stowing them away, along with her broken dreams, determined to forget。

Decades later, while coping with her own tragic loss, aspiring gallery owner Rory Grant leases Soline’s old property and discovers a box containing letters and a vintage wedding dress, never worn。 When Rory returns the mementos, an unlikely friendship develops, and eerie parallels in Rory’s and Soline’s lives begin to surface。 It’s clear that they were destined to meet—and that Rory may hold the key to righting a forty-year wrong and opening the door to shared healing and, perhaps, a little magic。

Beautifully Crafted Masterpiece What a lovely story of family, friendship, and mending broken hearts! It did not matter one bit that I could guess what was going to happen several times in the book…。I loved reading about it coming true。 I loved reading about hearts, lovers, and family being reunited into one happy story。

Who doesn't love some romance?I really loved the fact that although this is definitely a romantic book, it isn't at all formulaic or predictable。 I don't often read a romance unless there is an historical factor and this had that and more。 Her characters were interesting and while sympathetic were also nuanced。 Who doesn't love some romance?I really loved the fact that although this is definitely a romantic book, it isn't at all formulaic or predictable。 I don't often read a romance unless there is an historical factor and this had that and more。 Her characters were interesting and while sympathetic were also nuanced。 。。。more

Gripping read This book was a joy to read and an inspiration to everyone to hold on to our dreams and faith in others。The book was gripping from the start and difficult to put down always wanting to discover the next part of the story。On a down side the ending was too abrupt and I wanted more…or will there be a book to follow up the story?

One of my favorite WWII readsI feel like I’ve read most of the popular WWII reads, so I love when I find one with a different perspective of the war。 This story is told not from inside a camp but from someone with their own unique part in the resistance。 Really enjoyed this one!

This book is not what I thought it would be based on the blurb。 It sounded as though it were a magical realism story about dress witches and the charms they cast。 It is not。 This was barely mentioned except for quotes in the opening chapters featuring Soline。 It was disappointing。 It was almost a disconnect from the story except that the magic was used to justify the extremely unbelievable coincidences。 It felt like a cop out。I found the historical story more interesting and it did keep me engag This book is not what I thought it would be based on the blurb。 It sounded as though it were a magical realism story about dress witches and the charms they cast。 It is not。 This was barely mentioned except for quotes in the opening chapters featuring Soline。 It was disappointing。 It was almost a disconnect from the story except that the magic was used to justify the extremely unbelievable coincidences。 It felt like a cop out。I found the historical story more interesting and it did keep me engaged。 The current story annoyed me because Rory going on about the difficulties of her very privileged life grated my nerves。 While, yes, the part about Hux was tragic, the rest of her woes were ridiculously overdramatic。 Rory's treatment of her mother was horrible, from standing her up for brunch, to showing up at her home and being indignant that she had friends over to acting like she was being abused when her mother wanted to take her shopping。 I mean。。。come on。。。。 The mother was too one dimensional and almost a caricature of a society wife。 I was surprised that it was rated so high by so many but I suspect it is because it has that whole Hallmark Romance Movie vibe that many people love。 However, that is not my kind of book。 My kind of book would have been about the dress witches and their experiences。 。。。more

A good friend recommended this one。 It started a little slow but then turned out to be a really good book。 It did make you feel happy since all the characters were very likeable and the ending very satisfying。 Highly recommend。

This book is beautifully written。 Barbara Davis is a master story teller effortlessly weaving events between the past (WW2) and the present (1980s)。 I loved the history behind the Roussel women, the magie of sewing dresses Soline learned from her mother who in turn learned it from hers。 It is said that a bride wearing a Roussel wedding gown was guaranteed a happy ending, while ironically, Roussel women were said to be doomed in love。 I think the book would have turned out better if the author ha This book is beautifully written。 Barbara Davis is a master story teller effortlessly weaving events between the past (WW2) and the present (1980s)。 I loved the history behind the Roussel women, the magie of sewing dresses Soline learned from her mother who in turn learned it from hers。 It is said that a bride wearing a Roussel wedding gown was guaranteed a happy ending, while ironically, Roussel women were said to be doomed in love。 I think the book would have turned out better if the author had stuck with that dictum。 Instead, the last couple of chapters tuned a perfectly good story into a far fetched cheesy love conquers all type of story。 Personally, it was too much for me, but if that is what you're looking for, then this book is perfect for you。 Con: predictable ending。 Too cheesy for my taste。Con: It was much more interesting to read about Soline and Anson's life in war torn Paris in the 1940s than about Rory and Camila's stiff Sunday brunches in the 1980s for chapters on end。 Con: I don't understand how 40 years of hurt and grudges held by Anson and Soline could be erased in one night。 I also do not get how Thia knew the truth but remained silent for months。 Con: Camila was passive agressive toward her daughter Rory for years。 Upon spending two weeks with Soline she now knows how to act like the mother Rory always wanted her to be? come on!Con: we never find out what Soline does with her wedding dress。 it would have been nice to mention that after all these years she got to walk down the aisle wearing it。 3。5 stars。 。。。more

Page turnerEven though the story was somewhat Pollyanna, I enjoyed the ways in which the author weaved in the twists , turns, and connections into the story。 It held my interest。

Lisa Miller

Stick around till the endThe first 75% of the book laid the groundwork for caring about the characters。 I could’ve used a bit less of that or maybe a bit more action? But the last 25% was fun and satisfying。

Linda Wilner
